It is with spreadsheets that the whole personal computing concept really began. VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet program that ran on an Apple II - before IBM even was involved with micro computers and before Microsoft existed. Clearly, handling numbers is a big deal for spreadsheets and the reason that many teachers use spreadsheets for grading. Spreadsheets also serve two other broad purposes: 1) organizing information into neat rows and columns, and 2) storing large amounts of information that can easily be retrieved (as a database-type function). As with Google Docs: Documents and Presentations, Atomic Learning has a tutorial at Spreadsheets.
Sometimes as people approach spreadsheets they bring with them some math phobias that really are out of place. You may want to also look at this video:Introduction to Spreadsheets in Google Docs - http://goo.gl/oWyWPLesson Plans Elementary
